What to expect from a massage…
Welcome!
I decided to start this blog to answer questions that have come up throughout my career. So I’m starting at the beginning… or what I think should be the beginning.
as a massage therapist, I start every treatment with what is known as ‘verbal intake’. I want to know how my client feels today. whether they are new to my office or someone I have seen before doesn’t matter. Things change and some days we feel pretty good and some days we don’t. So tell me how you feel and what you need. It is also important to share recent injuries or surgeries or areas that should be avoided all together.
It is of utmost importance for you as the guest or client to understand that You are in charge of the session. If you don’t feel comfortable with anything your Massage Therapist is doing, ask them to change it or stop all together. Massage is very subjective. What feels like deep tissue to one person may feel superficial to another. also, one area of your body may be more sensitive than others. For example, I love deep pressure on my back and shoulders, but my calves are always so tight that deep pressure is frequently painful and I’m not always able to stand really deep pressure. So I’ll ask them to back out a little to ease the pressure on my lower legs. Consider what your goals are from today’s service. Do you want to address a specific issue? Are you looking for corrective care? Or do you just want time to relax and let someone else care for you? All of these are perfectly acceptable and should be handled to your satisfaction by your massage therapist.
Aromatherapy is another subjective aspect of massage. If the scent is from an all natural essential oil, it is often so lovely…unless you are sensitive to smells, or have an aversion to certain scents. Feel free to let your therapist know what your preference is.
If you have any sensitivities to lotions or oils it is important to convey this to your therapist. most, if not all of us, try to have hypoallergenic oils or lotions to be able to provide a safe environment for our clientele.
